The Most Annoying Sound in the World

Last night while feeding Evelyn (nope...still not sleeping through the night!), I heard a chirping sound. After a minute, I realized it was one of our smoke detectors. Ev was having a hard time getting back to sleep, so I stood in her doorway trying to figure out which one it was. It sounded muffled, so I figured it was the one in our attic. Instead of crawling up there at 1am, I texted Dan so that we would remember to change it in the morning.

I woke up this morning to this sight...

Apparently it woke Dan up (I was easily back to sleep), so he had gotten up to figure it out. He stood beneath every smoke detector waiting for the chirp...nothing. So he took them all down and changed all of their batteries, but could still hear the chirping...muffled...and not coming from any of these. After searching the garage, the attic, and considering crawling into the air ducts Jack Bauer style...he figured out it was in the utility room cabinet. Sorry honey, I put that in there when we changed the one in Ev's room to the voice kind...and apparently forgot to remove the battery. Maybe I'll get you your weapons drawer for Christmas for being such a good sport!

  1. Ah yes! The blasted smoke detector chirping. We have fond memories about trying to change ours as well. We have vaulted ceilings and can't reach them. (And we don't own a ladder) You would think after 8 years of home ownership we should invest in a ladder...yes...yes we should. But that's beside the point... one icy December night, our doggie had slipped on the ice and knocked out a tooth that was bleeding like a banchee, and while we were waiting for it to stop so we could go to bed, the blasted thing started chirping. Long story short, I ended up on a Paint bucket, balanced on the microwave, on top of the microwave cart hitting the dumb thing with a broom, trying to make it shut up. After many other failed attempts, two more chirping detectors, and a terrified dog running around the house dripping blood everywhere trying to escape the scary chirping, we finally succeeded in getting the battery OUT, by me standing on Andy's shoulders, while he stood on top of the dresser. (at 2 am) I'm really glad we lived to tell the day... I wasn't sure we would at the time.

  2. Do you watch Modern Family? There was an episode about this!

Here's a short clip from the episode. Dan will appreciate it:

The punchline is kinda like yours...turns out there was an old one that was supposed to be thrown out but instead was up in the attic.

    Glad you found the source!

  3. That reminds me of the Friends episode when Phoebe's smoke detector keeps beeping! :-)
